Many insurance companies are losing money selling Obamacare policies. Unfortunately, the White House wants to make their losses your problem. Read more.

“It is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West. They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition, and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism.” President Obama, December 6, on the San Bernardino shootings.
Sometimes the country needs a President, not a partisan. Continue reading
Congress Should Block Insurer Bailout
This could be a very merry Christmas for Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of Texas. The Obama administration wants to stuff its stocking with $257,172,917.34 – at your expense – to compensate the company for losing scads of money last year selling Obamacare policies in the Lone Star State.
That would bring that single company’s total corporate welfare haul for the 2014 plan year to $843.3 million.
That is, unless Congress decides this week to play the Grinch that stole the corporate welfare Christmas. Read more on RealClearHealth.
There Is No Plan To Destroy The Islamic State
![Hillary Clinton presented her plan for defeating the Islamic State recently. It won't work. Nor will those advanced by her Republican opponents. [Credit: NY Daily News]](https://i0.wp.com/www.dougsbriefcase.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/credit-NY-Daily-News.jpg?resize=300%2C210)

His political opponents, he said, believe that “only Christians, proven Christians, should be admitted” as refugees and that we “shouldn’t admit 3‑year old-orphans.”
The President’s efforts to divert attention from his foreign policy debacles (which helped make orphans and refugees of three-year-olds) have so far fallen flat. The vast majority of Americans has lost confidence in his campaign against the Islamic State. A Washington Post poll found that 57 percent disapprove of the way he’s dealing with the terrorist group – including 46 percent who strongly disapprove – against only 35 percent who support him.
That public sentiment, of little interest to the President, is a leading concern for those vying to succeed him. Even Bernie Sanders claims to have a plan to destroy the Islamic State. Though they differ in certain respects, most of these plans call for dropping more bombs against more targets from planes flying the flags of more countries (with the possible exception of Russia), providing more arms to factions we don’t really know and can’t really trust, and deploying more military “advisers” (not to be confused with “boots on the ground”) to the region.
All of them suggest that Islamic State can be vanquished with relative ease and at little cost. All of them are blowing smoke. Continue reading
GOP Debate: Bring Back The CNBC Moderators

The issue didn’t come up during last week’s GOP debate, so Trump didn’t have the chance to elaborate on his declaration that he would have approved the project only if the Canadian company forked over 25 percent of its profits.
“I want a piece of the deal,” Trump told Bret Baier of Fox News. “When I say I want a piece, I’m now representing our country the way I would represent myself.” Continue reading
No, Zeke, You’re Not Paying For My Medicine
Dr. Emanuel, who served in a senior position at the Office of Management and Budget where he contributed to the recurring nightmare known as Obamacare, recently complained in the New York Times [“I Am Paying For Your Expensive Medicine”] that his insurance rates are high because the medicines you’re taking cost too much. Trump Is (Sort Of) Right About Yellen

Corporate news-gathering outlets do their best to repeat and amplify his every offbeat utterance. His accusation that Marco Rubio is a “disaster with his credit cards” has rippled through the press and forced Rubio to respond. Ditto for Trump’s mockery of Jeb’s energy, Carson’s religion, Carly’s face, Kasich’s poll numbers, Hillary’s marital relations (“If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?”), Bernie’s mental health and the menstrual cycles of debate moderators.
But as they were buzzing about his scheduled appearance on Saturday Night Live, the media largely overlooked what was perhaps Trump’s most heretical accusation of all. Continue reading
What We Know And Don’t Know About Obamacare, Part II

More than five years after its enactment there still are many questions about whether Obamacare is working. Here are four of them.
My previous post discussed what we know about Obamacare as its third open enrollment season begins. Here are four major questions about the future of Obamacare that remain unanswered.
Can insurance companies make money in the exchanges without corporate welfare? Obamacare contains some very expensive sweeteners to entice insurance companies to sell through the exchanges. These include risk corridor payments and $20 billion over three years in inaptly named “reinsurance” payments, money government takes from participants in group health plans and gives to insurers that participate in the exchanges. Both are scheduled to end in 2017.
What We Know And Don’t Know About Obamacare, Part I

Obamacare’s third open enrollment season has kicked off, beginning the next chapter in its turbulent history. Today’s post discusses what we know about Obamacare. Tomorrow’s will discuss what we still don’t know.
What We Know
Fewer people are uninsured. How many fewer is a matter of dispute, but the improvement is substantial by any measure. HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell credits Obamacare with reducing the number of uninsured people by 17.6 million since 2010. And though you’ll likely hear this number repeated (and often rounded up to 18 million), it’s almost certainly exaggerated. Continue reading
